On average, we spend 26 years of our lives asleep. That’s over a third of our lives tucked up in bed! With all that time in a peaceful state of slumber, it goes without saying that ensuring that your sleep environment is both comfortable and clean is hugely important. It’s vital that you have a mattress which is not only comfy and supportive, but also safe and hygienic.

With warmer weather approaching (dare we say it!), your mattress might be last on your list of things around the house to give a good spring clean. But, there can be many natural and synthetic nasties lurking in there, from sweat and skin cells to food and cosmetics. Taking steps to take good care of your mattress can help ensure that your sleep environment remains clean, safe, and conductive of good quality sleep.

We’re sharing a few simple tips to help you ensure that your bed remains a hygienic and comfortable place to rest your head:

1.     Get a mattress protector

A mattress protector can be a worthwhile purchase to help keep your mattress clean. Adding a protective layer between yourself and the mattress, the protector can be washed regularly to prevent the build-up of bacteria.

2.     Don’t let pets in the bed

A huge 43.6% of pet owners share a bed with their cat or dog. But, sleeping with your family pet can lead to an increased build-up of bacteria, pet hair, and urine. Sleep separately from your pooch at night time to help keep your sleep environment hygienic.

3.     Vacuum your mattress

Giving your mattress an all over vacuum regularly will help eradicate dust, dirt, and dead skin. Ensure that you pay attention to the seams and crevices where the nasties may build up.

4.     Remove stains

Stains can be caused by a whole manner of things, and it’s important that these dirty areas are tended to. Spot clean stains using a solution of washing up liquid and warm water, then leave to soak. Follow by scrubbing with damp towel to rinse.
